In April, we got into contact with the High School of Noblesville. Noblesville is a town in in the US-state Indiana. A teacher and her class asked us to make and mail an interview about important events of the 20th century, e.g. Vietnam, the moonlanding and the gulf war.
This is an excerpt of one of the first mails from Noblesville High School.

Noblesville High School German Department

"Durch meine Augen/Through My Eyes"

This year students of German at Noblesville High School and students of English at several schools in Germany are interviewing their parents, grandparents, and community members about their perceptions of various events of the 20th Century that the students designate as historically, culturally, or socially significant. NHS and the German students exchange interviews via websites and analyze differences in perceptions and the historical and cultural context of these experiences which may account for these differences.

German students will record their interviews in German and American students in English, so the language component will be primarily comprehension. Students may also record their interviews in audio or video format . These perceptions are unique in the world and are a fleeting resource which our students can capture before they are lost forever.

BASICALLY YOUR STUDENTS INTERVIEW OLDER PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR PERSPECTIVES ON THESE EVENTS AND THEN SEND WHAT THEY LEARNED TO US (IN GERMAN). AND INTERVIEW COULD DEAL WITH ONE TOPIC OR SEVERAL TOPICS. IT DOESN'T MATTER. WE WILL ADD IT TO OUR WEBPAGES AND DO ANY TRANSLATIONS NECESSARY.

So we asked our parents or grandparents to tell us about some of the topics and mailed the interviews back to Noblesville. After that some of us exchanged some more (private) mails with the Indiana students.

One year later (in April 2001) we, again, had a short e-mail exchange with the same school, but different students.

Sir John Leman High School, Beccles (UK)

This is a school in Beccles - a small but beautiful old town in Suffolk, East Anglia (UK).

We had an e-mail exchange with some students (aged about 14) who are/were in their first year of learning German. They wrote us in German and we answered in German, too. The exchange was rather short and there was - at least - one misunderstanding. However, some colleagues at our school and also their school hope that the contact will be revived some day soon.
